Not One Jot or Tittle

Jesus said in Matthew 5:18 (NKJV), “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittlewill by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” More modern translations replace the words “jot” and “tittle” with phrases like “tiny penstroke” (WEB) or “iota” (ESV).

But I really like the idea of a jot and tittle. A jot is the smallest letter in the Hebrew language and looks similar to an apostrophe in English. A tittle is a mark that completes ordifferentiates one letter from another, like the line that distinguishes an R from a P in English.

Jesus said that even these marks meant something and made his Word complete. The same is true with his Kingdom. Even those who seem least significant in the eyes of the world mean something to God—something of eternal importance.

Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) provides higher education to adults, but we believe that even the youngest children, the “jots and tittles” of the world, are infinitely important to God, and we want them to know that truth.

As a part of the Story of Scripture initiative, DTS just launched a brand-new children’s story book series called Jot and Tittle. It’s the story of a precocious little pig named Jot and a timid donkey named Tittle. The pair comes together to journey through the greatest stories of Scripture. Through their adventures, we want to help children from the youngest age understand that they are vitally important to God.

We don’t often see children for who they can become. We get consumed in the daily grind of preparing meals, rushing to and fro for school, games, music lessons, and just the business of life. But every child bears the image of God and is created for His divine purpose. It’s never too early to begin to instill that message in their hearts and minds.

If you have young children or grandchildren, we’d love for you to check out Jot and Tittle book 1, and keep your eye out for future editions as our little critters begin their journey through Scripture, along the way finding that God has a plan for them in the grand narrative of His Word.

It’s a message that changes our fictional characters, but more importantly, it’s a message that can begin to change your children and loved ones, and even you yourself. We all feel small and insignificant at times, and even unclean, like a pig or a donkey. But you matter to God, and so do the young ones in our life.

Remember, not one jot or tittle will pass away from God’s Word, and neither will you. You matter to God—even the tiniest details, from the tip of your head to the bottom of your feet.
