The Covenant Keeper
I often wonder what life and faith would be like if God were fickle and moody. What if we woke up every morning wondering where we stood with God? What if He didn’t get enough sleep last night, and suddenly He decided He really doesn’t love me as much as He thought He did yesterday?
Years ago, there was a popular bumpersticker that read, “God said it. I believe it. That settles it.” People often took a lot of flak for making that declaration on the bumper of their cars, but the fact is, it’s true.
I often wonder what life and faith would be like if God were fickle and moody. What if we woke up every morning wondering where we stood with God? What if He didn’t get enough sleep last night, and suddenly He decided He really doesn’t love me as much as He thoughtHe did yesterday?
Or what if he finally threw up His hands and said, “I’ve had enough of these rebellious, evil people, and decided to start over.” If this were the character of God, we’d all have a serious problem.
But the Scripture and the Spirit have a different story to tell about the character of God. They reveal that God is faithful, true, unchanging, unwavering, and immovable in His will and plan. In short, when God makes a promise, He keeps it–no matter what.
That’s called a covenant. We don’t use that word too much in our world today, but it’s an important word, especially to believers. Every day our courts are filled with people who break promises. They default on legal agreements, they fail to pay binding contracts, and divorce courts are filled with people who swore to love each other until death, but circumstances change.
But God is a “covenant keeper.” If God makes a promise to someone, it’s ironclad. Consider Noah, Abraham, Moses andDavid. He made irrevocable promises to each of them, and those covenants still hold up today.
So, if Jesus said to us, “I will always be with you,” or, “I love you with an everlasting love,” why would you ever doubt the veracity of his words? The promises he makes to us as His children are as ironclad as any of the others He’s made throughout human history.
The next time you wonder, “Where do I stand with God?” ask yourself what kind of God you know. Honestly, there are times when we become faithless, but even in those moments, God is always faithful, and His promises never fail. Let that be your stake in the ground.
